Man using UT player alias in Snapchat extortion scheme agrees to prison term

A Sweetwater man charged with extorting a dozen woman and two girls through Snapchat while using the alias of a University of Tennessee football player has agreed to a prison term rather than going to trial.

Brandon Douglass Shanahan, who was facing federal counts of extortion, will serve 18 months, according to the plea agreement filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court. He also will have to serve a year of supervised probation once he’s released.

Shanahan, 22, pretended he was UT senior cornerback Cameron Sutton while he communicated with the women. Authorities charged him in May.
