Two former Cocke County jail employees indicted on drug charges

Two former Cocke County Sheriff's Office employees are facing charges for using their positions to illegally obtain prescription drugs.

TBI Special Agents and the Cocke County Sheriff's Office started investigating in August the allegations against Autumn Davis and Shayelen Scheffers.

Davis was a nurse at the Cocke County Jail and Scheffers was a correctional officer.

Investigators found that Davis used her job as a jail nurse to get oxycodone and hydrocodone pills and Scheffers helped.

On August 30, the Cocke County Grand Jury indicted both of them with obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and conspiracy to possess a controlled substance in excess of 2,000 grams.

Authorities arrested Davis and Scheffers earlier this week.

According to Cocke County Sheriff Armondo Fontes, Davis was also charged with theft because they determined she stole jail equipment when she was fired.

"This is a very unfortunate situation which involves employees entrusted to do the right thing and yet they chose to be involved in criminal activity," Sheriff Armondo Fontes said.

Fontes added that he will not tolerate any employees taking part in criminal activity.
