VA hospital wait times scrutinized after Ariz. scandal

Increasingly under fire over veterans' health care, President Obama Wednesday declared he will not stand for misconduct at the nation's VA hospitals.

This comes after claims 40 veterans died while waiting for care in Phoenix and a reported cover-up of the backlog.

The two closest VA hospitals to Knoxville are Middle Tennessee or the Tri-Cities.

Within the last month, 10News requested information about wait times at Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City.

The VA told us every effort is made to get a new patient an appointment within 30 days. If no appointment is scheduled within 90 days, the veteran is placed on what's called the "electronic wait list." The VA says it also works with community providers.

In the latest statistics, the hospital says three patients at Mountain Home have had to wait 14 days or longer for an appointment with a primary care physician.
