19 people became U.S. citizens

KNOXVILLE - A total of 19 people became naturalized U.S. citizens at a ceremony in U.S. District Court on Friday.

The citizens came from 16 different countries.

One man from Holland, a region in the Netherlands, said he's been an American at heart for years.

"It's a privilege," Ted Vanderende said. "In my old country, I never had the opportunity because I was always somewhere else, so this is the first year I'm going to vote, and I feel very honored."

The news comes a day after 40 people became U.S. citizens at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
