Dozens of people packed into the Bearden Middle School gym Saturday morning for the first annual 3-on-3 JaJuan Latham Basketball Tournament.
Police say 12-year-old JaJuan was killed in a gang-related shooting in April 2016. He was an innocent bystander. He attended BMS.
The money raised at the event will fund a scholarship in JaJuan's name that will be given to a Bearden Middle School student.
Family says the tournament reminds them of Jajuan.
"It carries me a long way," JaJuan's mother Dalandra Porter said. "This is something JaJuan would have loved himself because he was just a person that loved doing things for others."
Rejanae Porter knows her brother would have loved this tournament because of the sport itself.
"I thought it was special," she said. "I know he would have liked it because that's what he loved to do. He was always running around in our room playing basketball and being loud."
