Bridge named in memory of Zaevion Dobson

Oct. 21, 2016: The Heiskell Avenue bridge over interstate 275 was officially renamed the "Zaevion Dobson Memorial Bridge."

The Heiskell Avenue bridge over Interstate 275 was officially renamed the Zaevion Dobson Memorial Bridge on Friday.

Back in April, lawmakers approved changing the name of the bridge near the Lonsdale neighborhood where the 15-year-old Fulton High School sophomore lost his life in December 2015 while shielding his friends from gunfire.

The new bridge sign was unveiled during halftime of Fulton's home football game Friday night. Dobson's mother, Zenobia, and his brother, Zach, were joined at the presentation ceremony by state Rep. Eddie Smith and former state Rep. Joe Armstrong.

Zenobia Dobson said she couldn't be prouder of her son.

"Just proud ... honored to be a mother of a hero. It's time for a change, and it's going to start with our kids first. I know Zaevion is watching," she said.

The Lonsdale community also honored Zaevion Saturday by giving back in his name through Project Elevate's Zaevion Dobson Day of Service. They also called it "Hero Day."

"Our goal is to mentor, culture, cultivate and educate youth and with this event. It's a way for us to reach out to the young people in Knoxville, the young people in Lonsdale and show them there's ways to help the community and there's ways to get involved," said Latroy Lewis, Project Elevate founder.

UT athletes teamed up with children in Lonsdale to wash cars and pick up trash in the community.

All proceeds from the event will go toward providing Lonsdale Elementary School with all new gym equipment.
