Cyclists raise money for child battling cancer

MARYVILLE, TN - Local cyclists of all levels came together Saturday morning to raise money for a young boy from Knoxville battling cancer.

Eight-year-old Lucas Jones is battling Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a form of childhood cancer that can be very aggressive. His parents Robert and Karina were overwhelmed by the showing of support from the community.

"We just wanted to thank everyone that came out today, the response was overwhelming," said Robert.

He and Karina both work to support their family of three boys but Lucas' treatment and the expenses that come with it make their financial situation difficult.

"It means so much to us that so many people care and would take the time to come out here so early this morning. I've never seen so many bikes!" Robert said.

About 225 cyclists came out for the race. Registration was free, but 100 percent of donations to the race will go to the family.

The family also held a 5k fun run for about 25 people.

In total, they were able to raise $9,629.47.

Local store Cycology also pledged to donate 10 percent of the money they earn today.

If you would like to donate, the family has a GoFundMe page. Their goal is to raise $75,000.

More information can be found on the family's Facebook page
