KNOX COUNTY - Two people survived a small, single-engine plane crash into the French Broad River in East Knox County on Tuesday.

According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the plane struck a power line before crashing into the river behind a home on Fawver Lane, across the river from the Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

The Knox County Sheriff's Office, Rural/Metro, and Knoxville Emergency Volunteer Rescue Squad were responding to the crash site.

Officials say the pilot, 28-year-old Mark Watkins, and his passenger, Emily Smith, 25,  were able to get out of the wreckage on their own. They received minor injuries in the crash and were transported to the hospital to be checked out.

The plane was almost completely submerged in the water, with only its tail still visible.

There were reports of power outages in the area. KUB worked to repair the damage and get the power back on.
