Knox County leaders want to install solar panels on dozens of buildings to generate extra funding.
Mayor Tim Burchett announced Monday the panels would go on about 80 buildings in the county, including schools and government buildings.
The county would enter an agreement with "Efficient Energy of Tennessee" to install the panels.
The company has already installed similar panels at schools in Campbell County.
Burchett says there's no upfront cost for the county and the energy collected would be sold to TVA.
"The payout would put money in the till for Knox County, and that's money we could pay more for teachers, more for supplies, things like that and less on energy," said Burchett.
The Board of Education and Knox County Commission will both have to approve the proposal.
