Walking to save lives cut short

(WBIR - Knoxville) People walked Knoxville Saturday in hopes of raising awareness for suicide prevention in East Tennessee.

Saturday was the 5th annual Out of the Darkness prevention walk in Victor Ashe Park. The event raises money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. This year, organizers said they exceeded their goal, raising more than $15,000.

It also helped to raise awareness for services available throughout the area.

"We want people to understand the underlying issues with mental health illness and also the services available to help them get help so that no other family has to live through this tragedy," said the event's chair P.J. Alexander.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. More than 38,000 people take their lives every year.
