Knoxville Zoo demolishes barn for new tiger area

The Knoxville Zoo is doing a bit of demolition to make way for a new $10 million project (2/18/16)

(WBIR - East Knoxville) Big changes are taking place at the Knoxville Zoo and guests will get a chance to watch it all happen.

Crews on Thursday demolished the old rhino barn to begin site preparation for a new habitat for Malayan tigers.

The $10 million Tiger Forest project will include two outdoor tiger habitats and a building that offers indoor viewing areas for guests.

While construction will last until it opens next year, the zoo is making sure it doesn't impact visitors.

"You'll be able to come and actually watch the transformation. We'll have opportunities built in for everyone to see, because whether you're 8 or 80, people love to watch construction and demolition and all that," Knoxville Zoo CEO Lisa New said.

The construction is the next step in the zoo's master plan.

The rhinos are already enjoying their new home across from the elephants.

Tiger Forest is expected to open in 2017.
