An 85-year-old Ohio woman died Monday after falling off a parking lot guard wall in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, park officials said Tuesday.
Park Rangers were called to a medical emergency at the Newfound Cap parking lot near the North Carolina/Tennessee state line just before 2 p.m. Monday, officials said.
Marguerite Root, 85, of Canal Winchester, Ohio, was sitting on a parking lot guard wall when she fell approximately eight-to-nine feet to a lower stone walkway, officials said. Root had been taking pictures with her family with a view of the mountains in the background when she fell backward off the rock wall.
Park rangers and Cherokee Tribal EMS responded to the medical call. Root was taken to Cherokee Tribal Hospital in Cherokee, N.C., where she was pronounced dead.
