Empty Stocking Fund preparing 3,600 food baskets

(WBIR, Knoxville) - It takes hours of preparation and more than a thousand volunteers to help feed thousands of families in Knox County, but that's exactly what the Empty Stocking Fund is doing at the Jacob Building this week.

Volunteers are filling boxes with enough food to feed a family for about a week.

It includes everything from canned vegetables and soup, to potatoes, stuffing and even a ham.

The Knoxville News Sentinel has been doing this for more than 100 years, so they have a pretty efficient system which includes volunteers that have been helping out all week.

"The first day we actually helped put the boxes together, yesterday we helped put toys out for the kids, and today we are actually filling the baskets up and getting them ready for delivery for Saturday," said volunteer Mickey Shelton. "My wife and I are both retired, and we feel like we are very blessed, so we both wanted to come out and help with the Empty Stocking Fund."

Children in the families will also receive one toy and a book.

3,600 food baskets will be handed out Saturday to families who have already been prequalified.
