Facebook activates safety check feature for Sevier Co. fires

Wildfires driven by wind gusts are prompting the evacuations of multiple areas of Gatlinburg including downtown Gatlinburg, fire officials said Monday night.

Facebook has activated its “safety check” for those impacted by the major fires in Sevier County.

It’s an option the social networking site uses when a disaster or major crisis strikes, allowing users to notify friends and family they are safe.

Wildfires in the Great Smoky Mountains spread quickly out of control during high winds on Monday, spreading to areas of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Wears Valley. Mandatory evacuations were put in place for resident and visitors as the flames spread.
