Families tour new NICU facility at East Tennessee Children's Hospital

Families toured the new $75 million expansion to the East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

KNOXVILLE - The new $75 million Neonatal Intensive Care Unit facility at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital is set to open in a few weeks.

Hospital staff welcomed families to tour the new tower Sunday with a ribbon cutting ceremony beforehand.

Families were able to see inside the NICU including a few of the 44 new patient rooms.

The Graham family, whose three children were born premature, was amazed at the transformation and the changes.

"It’s incredible. We were in the NICU for 177 days with Ayden and 41 with [Brayden] and although we love the NICU, this is going to make the experience so much better," Jenny Corbett shared alongside her partner Joe Graham.

While on the tour, Jenny wiped away a few tears because she lost one of her twins, Ayden while in the NICU this year. Ayden's twin Brayden survived.

“He fought so hard but it was too much," Jenny said.

Jenny also spent 22 days in the NICU with her older son Jaygen.

It was an emotional tour for her family but inspiring at the same time. She was amazed at the individual rooms, the surgery rooms and the garden terrace that is open to families at any time of the day.

"The garden, those moments when you get bad news, that would have been so nice," she added.

Jenny believes the new facility will help save future lives as it's larger, more spacious and accommodating and it's a peaceful atmosphere.

"The experience is awful but if you are going to go through it, you want to be in the best place," Jenny said, saying the new NICU is the best place.
