EAST KNOX COUNTY - The Peters family had plenty of room and plenty of wild plants they needed rid of. So, they decided to get some goats.

"We've got a lot of property and our property is wooded and we have a lot of poison ivy and sumac," said Melody Peters.

The goats did their job and helped the family clean up their property. They ended up falling in love with the animals.

"They kind of became our babies," said Melody. "My husband says having goats is what you get when you have a toddler and a dog. They're very loving like a dog but, they are very mischievous."

Melody and her husband both work in the medical field and named their goats after singers and some of their favorite doctors they have worked with.

In addition to the goats, the family also has dogs, cats and chickens that are named after female singers and precious stones.

The family keeps tabs of the goats through cameras set up in the goats' pen.

"Our children are grown so we've become those parents," laughed Melody. "Instead of having your children at daycare, so you're watching them at daycare, we're watching our goats at the house."

The Peters did extensive online research before buying their goats and encourage others to do the same. They also joined a Facebook group: Goat & Chicken talk. They also remind anyone thinking about owning goats to think about the work involved. Still, they say it's worth it.

"Having farm animals is a lot of work but you get a lot of pleasure out of it," said Peters. "They're so funny. They're the clowns of the animal world. If you're ever in a really bad mood or just kind of down, you go out there and they'll sit there and love on you, they'll start playing and by the end of it, you're laughing and you feel so much better."
