The Oliver Hotel has a rich history in Knoxville. That doesn't mean you won't find something new when you stop by. The Peter Kern Library now serves as a specialty cocktail bar and coffee shop.
Kelly Vankelegom is one of the baristas in the new shop.
"The Peter Kern Library as the bar is focusing on craft cocktails, focusing on kind of more obscure ingredients so we're trying to incorporate that into our coffee as well," she said. "We've got a lot of different liqueurs from all around the world that a lot of people haven't heard of and incorporating that into coffee is really fun."
That's not the only thing that sets the coffee apart. Kelly and fellow barista Chelsey create works of art with the foam on top of the coffee.
"Latte art is a great way to showcase a well poured shot of espresso. There are many factors that kind of factor into a perfect shot of espresso, the temperature of the water, the pressure which you tamper the espresso when it's ground."
This forms a thin layer of foam referred to as the crema that acts as a canvas for the artist. Designs vary from classic elegance to friendly elephants.
The Peter Kern Cocktail Bar is open everyday and serves coffee from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Oliver Hotel.
