Gov. Haslam visits Morristown to discuss TN auto industry

Governor Haslam visited Mahle Industries in Morristown Thursday to discuss the growing automobile industries in Tennessee.

The governor toured the plant and stressed the importance of Mahle to the Hamblen County community.

He says Tennessee is one of the leading automotive manufacturing states in the country. The industry provides thousands of jobs across the state.

Governor Haslam also says that the newly approved state budget is key to providing businesses like Mahle the employees they need.

"Our key initiative was the Tennessee Promise," he said. "We want to make certain business like this one have the employees they need so when we can go to every Tennessean who graduates high school and we'll give you two years of community college or technology school absolutely free; we think that's important for Tennesseans but also employers like this one that we're trying to encourage to grow here in Tennessee."

Haslam says he believes the Tennessee Promise program may be the most important piece of legislation 20 years from now.

That program provides free secondary education to Tennessee high school graduates. He says maintaining high education was his priority when it came to the budget.
