Imagination Library donates 1.5 millionth book

(WBIR - West Knox County) Imagination Library of Knox County on Sunday donated its 1.5 millionth book to a lucky East Tennessee child. Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett presented the book as part of the milestone celebration at West Town Mall.

Imagination Library of Knox County sends a new book for free every month to any local child five years of age and younger.

Holly Kizer, the Knox County program coordinator, said around 18,000 local children currently are enrolled in the program which has a huge impact on the lives of kids.

"It not only brings literacy to the forefront of the home, but it reminds parents that reading is something that's vital to do with their children," Kizer said.

The Governor's Foundation funds half of the program and the rest is paid for through location donations.

Dolly Parton originally started the nationwide program in East Tennessee and over the years its grown to include more than 660,000 children across the country.

In East Tennessee, it only costs $12 to pay for monthly books for one child for an entire year.
