Jones and Fulmer: Two UT coaches, one bond

Vols football coach Butch Jones and retired coach Phil Fulmer show their friendship flows deeper than just their love for Tennessee football. The pair's friendship involves late nights text messages and sharing of advice.

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS - Two UT football coaches, one bond.

Former Vols head coach Phillip Fulmer and current coach Butch Jones are good friends, bonded by their love for their team and university.

While there are a lot of things different about their careers in football – Jones was a receiver, while Fulmer was a lineman at UT – they have more in common than you might think.

Fulmer says he sees a lot of similarities between himself and Jones.

“From a work standpoint, a work ethic standpoint, making recruiting a priority, his organization a priority and his coaches. He's been able to retain his coaches. I think that's so important,” Fulmer said.

Jones said he appreciates his relationship with the former Vols coach.

“You know just the little tidbits I'll get at 9:30 at night via text message or a phone call or something like that. I want that. And I think that's very, very healthy,” he said. “We have something very special here."

Jones is the first coach since Fulmer to beat Florida and Georgia in the same season - Fulmer did it in 2004.

If all goes according to plan Saturday, Jones could also be the first Vols coach since Fulmer to beat Texas A&M. That happened at the Cotton Bowl at the end of the 2004 season.
