Knox Co. student's speech garners 1.3M views on YouTube

Concern about Common Core curriculum standards led to national attention for one Knox County student.

Ethan Young, a Knox County high school student, spoke at a Board of Education meeting two weeks ago. During that meeting, teachers voiced their concerns and Young gave a five-minute speech against Common Core. He criticized the testing, the teacher evaluations, and how states approved Common Core.

"I've been fortunate to have incredible educators that open my eyes to the joys of learning. I love them like my family. I respect them entirely which is why it frustrates me to review the team and APEX evaluation systems. These subjective anxiety producers do more to damage a teacher's self-esteem than you realize," he said.

Young's speech went up on YouTube, and in a matter of two weeks it has received more than 1.3 million views. Several national media outlets have picked it up including Glenn Beck and Fox News.
