KPD: Carjacking suspect also faces drug charges

A man who was helped out by a a Knoxville Police officer earlier in the day ended up in jail Thursday for carjacking and other charges.

According to KPD, a woman was carjacked in the parking lot of the old Regas Restaurant on Gay Street just before 6:00 pm. When officers began asking questions, they identified the suspect as Eddie Sawyer, 37.

An hour and a half earlier, an officer had dropped Sawyer off at Knox Area Rescue Ministries (KARM) after answering a call about a sick or injured person call off Middlebrook Pike. The officer determined that Sawyer was not ill, but agreed to drop him at KARM as a courtesy.

An undercover officer spotted the stolen car pulling into a convenience store on Broadway, and followed him. He watched Powers put on a hooded jacket and sunglasses and go into the store. When he came back out, officers arrested him and found he was carrying .8g of crack cocaine.

The victim identified Sawyer as the man who stole her car. Sawyer was charged with aggravated robbery, carjacking and possession of a controlled substance.
