KNOXVILLE - As Labor Day weekend begins, there are plenty of events going on throughout East Tennessee.
The Smoky Mountain Grand Slam Challenge Banquet and Fly-fishing tournament continues Saturday. The banquet took place Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the tournament will take place along the Clinch River. Tickets range in price. You can find more information at smokymountainslam.com.
Regal Cinemas across the country will show the original "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" to honor actor and comedian Gene Wilder, who passed away last week. The Regal Pinnacle Stadium 18 Imax and RPX will have showings at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday.
The Old City Cover Jam will be held Sunday at NV Nightclub and Courtyard. The Coveralls will headline the event, which runs from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. The proceeds will benefit Autism Site Knoxville.
On Monday, local group "Cut from Kevlar" will honor active and veteran military members by providing free food, music and giveaways for Labor Day. The event will be held at the Courtyard Marriot in Alcoa from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Other events got an early start Friday and Saturday.
A kickball tournament and fundraiser to honor fallen Officer Kenny Moats was held Saturday morning. The event started at 10 a.m. at Shoreline Church off Westland Drive.
The "Stop the Violence" BBQ Cookoff was also on Saturday at Dr. Walter Hardy Memorial Park. Competition started at 7 a.m., with judging at 1 p.m. The event also featured music and entertainment throughout the day.
Saturday also hosted the Comedy Barn "Kickin' Chicken 5K Run and Fun Walk". All proceeds from the race will benefit The Safe Harbor Child Advocacy Center of the Smokies.
