Local church donates bullet-proof vests to police

Vonore Baptist church donates vest to police

VONORE, TN - Members of Vonore Baptist Church heard about a problem in their local police department and decided to help.

“Most of the vests that they had at Vonore were eight years old and so we said let’s get the best we can get,” said Pastor Doug Sager. "They took up a love offering and got more than enough to buy I think 11 vests at about $1,000 a piece.”

The church raised enough money to buy eleven vests--a generous act that humbled local law enforcement.

“The support that this community serves is unbelievable,” said Vonore Police Chief Randy Kirkland.

At Sunday's service, officers from Vonore and Madisonville were welcomed to the stage to receive the prayers and appreciation of the congregation.

“We are just beyond grateful for the love and support that they’ve shown us for this unbelievable gift," Kirkland said.

Pastor Sager is glad his church was willing and able to help.

“It’s just a great time to say to these men and women that we support you.”

Nine of the vests went to police in Vonore. The remaining two went to Madisonville.
