Blount Co. Schools sues Alcoa, Maryville for unpaid liquor taxes

(WBIR) The Blount County Board of Education is suing Alcoa and Maryville for almost $800,000 in unpaid liquor taxes.

State law requires 50 percent of the tax revenue collected from mixed-drink sales go to education. Blount County School said Alcoa and Maryville haven't given any of their liquor tax revenue to the school system.

The district said Maryville owes more than $503,000 dating back to 1996, and Alcoa owes more than $284,000 dating back to 1980.

In Knox County, both the county and Farragut are working to pay back thousands of dollars in unpaid liquor taxes.
