Knoxville man killed in fatal wreck on "The Dragon"

(WBIR) Blount County authorities said a 69-year-old Knoxville man died and a woman was hurt Thursday afternoon after their car went off the road and hit a tree.

Blount County Sheriff's Office said Harold Roy Sheely, 69, and Tiffany Bell, 21, were flown to UT Medical Center after the crash. Sheely passed away Thursday afternoon and Bell is in critical but stable condition.

Blount County Sheriff's Office said they responded to a report of a crash at mile marker 2 of U.S. Highway 129, commonly known as "The Dragon," around 11:36 a.m. Thursday.

Officials said Bell was driving in a convertible with Sheely when the vehicle went off an embankment. The car reportedly went airborne before crashing into a tree on the passenger side, about 8 to 10 feet in the air, before ending up at the base of the tree.

The convertible's top was open and both riders were wearing seat belts.

The Blount County Sheriff's Office Traffic Safety Unit is investigation the accident.
