Police: Woman who claimed she was robbed actually stole the cash

A store clerk in Maryville is accused of lying about an armed robbery to cover up her own crime.

Police say Mahala Wilburn, an employee at the Dollar General Store on East Broadway, called 9-1-1 last week to report a robbery. She claimed that she was in her car in the store parking lot after closing on February 12. She said a man knocked on her window and asked if she had any money, then he then pulled up his jacket showing a gun in the waistband. She told police she gave him the store's deposit bag, containing around $2600 dollars.

However, investigators determined that Wilburn was not telling the truth. She was charged with filing a false police report and theft. She may face additional charges because store deposits from two previous nights were never deposited.
