Sisters facing charges tied to alleged abuse of baby

(WBIR) Maryville police arrested a mother and her sister on charges tied the alleged abuse of a baby boy.

The mother of the baby, McKenna Lynn Verhulst, 22, said she left her son with her sister, Rachel Monique Davis, 19, because she was working long hours. When Verhulst came to see her son at her sister's house, she noticed bruises on the baby and took him to the hospital. Verhulst initially told police she hadn't seen her son in about a week. But after further investigation, officers said they believe Verhulst had not seen her son in nearly a month.

Officials took the child to East Tennessee Children's Hospital for care.

Police charged Verhulst with child neglect. Her sister is facing child abuse charges.
