TN man shot after pulling gun at Florida DUI checkpoint

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- A man passing through a DUI checkpoint Friday night in Lake City was shot and killed after he allegedly pulled a gun on a police officer.

The suspect, Jimmy Eugene Barker of Louisville, Tenn., died at the scene.

Officers made contact with Barker in his black 2012 Dodge pick-up truck just before midnight in the 1400 block of West Duval Street. According to LCPD, Barker drew a handgun and pointed it out of the vehicle window and at an officer.

Michael Lee was able to grab Barker's gun and a struggle ensued. During the struggle Lee grabbed his on-duty firearm and shot Barker. Barker's brother was inside the vehicle and was not shot or harmed in this incident. The brother has been cooperating with FDLE investigators in this incident.

The State Attorney's Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) were called to investigate the shooting which happened in the parking lot of the Lake City Professional Plaza directly across from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Counselors have been contacted to provide support to the involved officers.

Officer Lee has been placed on administrative leave during the on-going investigation, according to LCPD. Officer Lee is currently assigned to the Support Division, working as the Crime Prevention Officer and the agency coordinator for the Police Explorers program. He has been a member of this agency since June 2010.

The assisting agencies in the checkpoint last night were the Perry Police Department (DUI Enforcement Unit) and the Florida Highway Patrol.
