Townsend man with Alzheimer's drowns after wandering into pond

(WBIR - Townsend) A Townsend man with Alzheimer's disease died after leaving his home and wandering into a nearby pond early Wednesday morning, according to Blount County Sheriff James Berrong.

Authorities responded to the home of Marion Stanley, 78, around 3:45 a.m. Wednesday after Stanley's wife noticed he was missing. She advised deputies that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.

A K-9 unit, Sheriff's deputies and neighbors assisted in searching the area. A neighbor found a shoe near a pond about 50 yards from the Stanley's home and a deputy discovered Mr. Stanley's body in the pond around 7 a.m.

The Blount Special Operations Response Team was called in to recover his body.
