Volunteers offer Affordable Care Act enrollment help

(WBIR-Maryville) It's been more than a month since people started signing up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). But there has been a lot of questions concerning the different options.

This weekend, volunteers with the Tennessee Health Care Campaign (THCC) were on hand at the Blount County Library to answer questions and help people sign up for insurance. For three days, at least 25 people attended each session.

"Wow, there's a lot of questions on a lot of different topics. People want to know what kind of insurance there is... they want to know how much they're going to have to pay, and they want to know if they qualify," said Laura Sell, a THCC volunteer coordinator for Blount County.

Volunteers are halfway through with sessions at the Blount County Library.

Brenda Potter of Morgan County traveled to the Sunday session.

Doctors recently diagnosed her with rheumatoid arthritis. Potter said she has not worked since May.

"Basically I don't have health insurance and I haven't had it in awhile," Potter said.

Sell assisted Potter saying, "The biggest disappointment is the people who are under the poverty level. Because Medicaid wasn't expanded, then they're not eligible for any tax assistance."

Potter falls under that category.

Qualifying for the tax credit, that helps pay for insurance, depends on a person's income and family size.

According to healthcare.gov, these are the requirements:

$11,490 to $45,960 for individuals
$15,510 to $62,040 for a family of 2
$19,530 to $78,120 for a family of 3
$23,550 to $94,200 for a family of 4
$27,570 to $110,280 for a family of 5
$31,590 to $126,360 for a family of 6
$35,610 to $142,440 for a family of 7
$39,630 to $158,520 for a family of 8

Potter has no income and also does not qualify for Medicaid. According to whitehouse.gov, Tennessee's decision to not expand Medicaid means 234,000 people will be left uninsured.

"I did get some information about some different programs but still it's not insurance," Potter said.

The deadline to enroll for health insurance under the ACA is March 31, 2014.
