Monroe County fire prompts apartment evacuations

Fire on Monday night in the Tellico Plains area prompted authorities to evacuate several apartment complexes including one for the elderly as a precaution, according to Monroe County dispatchers.

No one was hurt and no structures burned in the Tellico Plains area. Power, however, did go out in Monroe County, causing confusion about the nature and extent of the evacuation.

A wildfire that had burned earlier in the day in Monroe County grew Monday night, according to dispatchers. About 9:15 p.m. fire authorities decided to evacuate several apartment complexes in Tellico Plains in the Fairview Road area as a precaution.

Patrick Hawkins, the town's mayor, opened the town's community center as a shelter where people could go.

The fire is under control, according to the dispatch center.

A fire also was reported Monday night in Vonore off Highway 72 and Cooks Hollow Road, according to dispatchers.
