New sports complex expected to boost Sevier County business

(WBIR - Gatlinburg) Rocky Top Sports World is still under construction near Gatlinburg-Pittman High School, but already the soon-to-be sports complex has contracted to host 19 sports tournaments for the 2014 - 2015 season.

The City of Gatlinburg and Sevier County are funding the $20 million facility that is expected to attract over 30,000 people from across the country in its first year.

General Manager, Steven Daugherty, said, "These youth

and amateur sporting events will bring 12,640 athletes, 17,460 spectators, and 12, 101 room nights to the Gatlinburg market in the first full year of operation." Daugherty also said this is just the beginning. "We will continue to book events so we are confident that we will significantly exceed our original projections."

Sevier County business are expected to reap the benefits of the construction of Rocky Top Sports World, especially places like Sleepy Bear Motel which is located not too far from the sports facility.

Patti Baxter, desk clerk manager for the hotel, said, "I think it's good for the economy and good for Gatlinburg. I'm really looking forward to it because it'll bring that much more into the area."

Rocky Top Sports World is slated to open on June 30th, with several sports tournaments scheduled to happen soon after. The sports facility is expected to hire about 30 people for full-time and part-time positions in addition to the positions for game officials and support workers.
