(WBIR, Knoxville) - A new eyeglass van is helping the Lions Club serve more people, more efficiently.
The Smoky Mountain Lions Vision Van was donated two years ago by Remote Area Medical.
It's been renovated and is now equipped to make eyeglasses on sight.
Wednesday was the first big event for the van. Volunteers were busy making glasses for people at the Fountain City Lions Club.
The new vision van is also opening up new possibilities for the future.
"Our goal is in another year or so to be able to take the back of that van and develop it into an optometrist office so it will be a one stop thing. We're a ways away from that. We have to get the funds and such before that can happen, and we're applying for grants and aids to get that taken care of. But we are really looking forward to when we will be able to have someone walk in and walk out with eye glasses in an hour or something like that," said Ron Riehn, volunteer coordinator.
Volunteers from several different eye care businesses help out with these events.
If you are in need of glasses, you can contact your local Lions Club for information.
