Fire damages former Manhattan Project headquarters

Firefighters in Oak Ridge are investigating what led to a fire at the former Manhattan Project headquarters.

Firefighters say occupants at the home returned to a house filled with smoke and a fire in the kitchen early Monday morning.

Anderson County Ambulance Service extinguished the fire, and the American Red Cross helped take care of the residents.

The one-story home is known as the Luther Brannon house. It housed General Leslie Groves and other top officials during World War II.

It's one of only three pre-World War II homes left in Oak Ridge.
