Officials set to break ground on Alexander Inn project

(WBIR - Oak Ridge) A historic East Tennessee inn is one step closer to welcoming in its new tenants.

Officials will officially break ground Thursday morning on the Alexander Inn Senior Living Center in Oak Ridge.

Back in May, Family Pride Corporation bought the historic property with the intention of turning it into an assisted living center for seniors.

The Manhattan Project era building was built back in 1943 and served as a hotel through the 1990s. Since then, the property sat empty and was in danger of collapsing. But its new owners have been working since May to stabilize the building.

The new senior living center isn't scheduled to be completed until mid-2014, but organizers said Thursday's groundbreaking will be a great opportunity for the public to tour the buildings.

Officials with the City of Oak Ridge, Department of Energy, Tennessee Historical Commission, East Tennessee Preservation Alliance, and Family Pride Corporation will participate in the ground breaking.

Its scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Thursday at the historic Guest House at the Alexander Inn Senior Living Center.

The inn is located at 210 East Madison Road in Oak Ridge.
