Police chief catches man suspected of breaking into his car

(WBIR-Oak Ridge) An accused thief is behind bars, after investigators say he broke into the Oak Ridge police chief's car and the chief chased him down.

20-year-old Justin Wagner is charged with burglary of a motor vehicle.

Court documents show Chief James Akagi heard his dog barking outside around 11:30 Friday night and went out to investigate. He found several items from his wife's unlocked car in the driveway.

Akagi noticed an unfamiliar car parked nearby and called police dispatch.

Chief Akagi and the responding officers searched the neighborhood and didn't find anyone, so they set up surveillance. A short time later, Akagi saw Wagner get into the car and speed off.

Akagi got into an unmarked police car and chased him. He stopped Wagner a short distance away, and the other officers arrested him.

Investigators believe Wagner may be connected to several other vehicle burglary cases in Oak Ridge.
