Prosecutors seek death penalty in 79-year-old man's murder

Prosecutors said they're seeking the death penalty against an Anderson County couple accused of killing a 79-year-old man and hiding his body.

Norman Lee Follis Jr., 50, and Tammy Sue Chapman, 46, are charged with murdering Sammie J. Adams in his home sometime between Dec. 5, 2011 and Jan. 24, 2012.

The pair stashed the body under a staircase in Adams's own apartment on Patt Lane, according to District Attorney General Dave Clark. The body was discovered after friends and neighbors reported to officials they haven't seen Adams for sometime, according to the Anderson County Sheriff's Department.

Clark said this case qualifies for the death penalty under state law because the victim was older than 70.

Follis is Adams's nephew.
