Annual Blue/Orange blood drive coincides with new Zika testing

Nov. 9, 2016: UT and Kentucky fans will face off in a the Orange/Blue Blood Drive the week after the teams face off on the football field.

Tennessee's competition against Kentucky won't end Saturday on the football field!

The annual Battle of the Orange and Blue blood drive begins November 14, the Monday after the game. On that day, MEDIC Regional Blood Center will also begin testing all blood donations for the Zika virus.

This will be the 29th year for the competition between the Vols and the Cats to see who can donate the most blood, and it's been dominated by Kentucky in the past few years.

Donors will receive an Orange/Blue t-shirt, a coupon for a free pizza from Papa John’s, a free Chick-fil-A Sandwich, a free Wendy’s Frosty, a free appetizer from Texas Roadhouse, and free admission to Fantasy of Trees.

Donors next week will be among the first to be tested for the Zika virus, as now mandated by the FDA. MEDIC officials believe this testing will help prevent the possible spread of the virus through a blood transfusion.
