KNOXVILLE - A section of parking meters on Gay Street will allow drivers to park there longer, and for a reduced rate.
The Gay Street viaduct will now be entirely 10-hour parking, at 30 cents per hour. Previously, half the spaces on the viaduct were limited to two hours, at $1.50 an hour.
City spokesperson Eric Vreeland says that parking leaders decided to make the change because people weren’t using the two hour spaces.
“We don’t want to have parking spaces and people not parking there,” he said.
The city’s solution is to give people using those spaces, on the peripheral edges of downtown, more time to park and to charge them less to park there.
The change affects about 24 spaces on the viaduct. Vreeland says the city is looking at making the same changes in other spots around the edges of downtown as well.
