SWEETWATER - Plans to turn an aging former Japanese school in Sweetwater into an athletic preps academy have fallen through.
Former Harlem Globetrotter Paul Gaffney had hoped to transform the Tennessee Japanese Meiki Gakuin (TMG) High School property into a school that emphasized both sports and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) classes.
The property has been deteriorating since the TMG school closed and would need a lot of work to be inhabitable.
Gaffney had hoped to start renovation work in the next few months, but a city official says Gaffney was unable to purchase the property. Sweetwater Planning and Development Officer Scott Wilson said there were issues with the language in the contract with the property owner.
Wilson said Gaffney is still looking at sites in the Sweetwater area to make his dream of the Gaffney Athletics Prep Academy a reality.
