KINGSPORT, TENN. - Human remains found in Kingsport have been positively identified as a man reported missing more than 12 years ago.
The discovery brings new details to the missing persons case of 41-year-old David Ratliff.
According to a release from the Kingsport Police, they are still treating it as an active unexplained death investigation.
Ratliff's remains were discovered on April 1 by a resident walking through a wooded area located 200 yards from a rental home that the missing man had rented 12 years ago on Fairview Avenue.
That woman called police and KPD Criminal Investigations Division, the East Tennessee State University Forensic Center and the University of Tennessee Department of Anthropology all investigated at the scene.
Ratliff's sister reported him missing in 2004. The man suffered from multiple medical afflictions and had been treated for a fall at a Kingsport hospital prior to his disappearance, investigators reported.
A full examination of the remains are still being conducted at UT facilities in Knoxville to determine a cause of death, the report said.
