Morgan Co. Sheriff's Office gives new life to old military vehicles

(WBIR-Wartburg) Military humvees, boats, and dunebuggies are just some of the latest equipment sitting on a parking lot at the Morgan County Sheriff's Office.

"It's seen a lot more action than we have," Sheriff Glen Freytag said next to a humvee, dating back to the Gulf War. "We got the razor; we got the boat."

The military program gives old equipment that was used in all branches of the military to law enforcement agencies that requested it. The MCSO heard of the program last year.

"We were talking to some other agencies. They were saying these things were available to the departments and so we looked into it," Sheriff Freytag added.

The sheriff added some of the new toys will be useful in Morgan County's wide and rugged terrain. Some of the other stuff, like a tractor trailer sitting in the back of the parking lot, is not expected to be used as much. So it could be sold after they own if for a year, and that money can go toward other equipment.

"Everything is going to be marked whether we can mark it out or delete it or keep it or whatever," the sheriff said.

The military even gave the department other tools, like overhead lights and industrial tire repair kits for cruisers.

"It's been a great help to us, been a great help to the department."
