State, local road crews ready for winter weather

With the possibility of winter-like weather in our area, TDOT and local county officials are preparing just in case.

TDOT has put brine on area interstates and state highways. Workers will remain on standby throughout the evening, in case the are needed.

In East Tennessee alone, TDOT has an almost $8-million dollar snow budget, more than 200 salt trucks, and 58,000 tons of salt ready to go.

Knox County is getting its trucks loaded with brine and its salt spreaders in order. It will have all its trucks loaded by Monday night and ready to go at a moments notice.

The county says there's not much pre-treating they can really do because of all the rain we're expecting, which would just wash the brine away.

There's still something drivers can do to be safe.

"I think that they should look out for the icing conditions on the roads and just be, slow down and stay off the roads as much as they possibly can," said Brian Hubbs, Knox County Director of Highway Maintenance.
