$10 million in computer research funding is bound for the Universtiy of Tennessee-Knoxville.
The National Science Foundation awarded UT a grant to develop a computer system capable of interpreting the massive amounts of data on the NSF's nationwide grid.
Sean Ahern, a computer scientist with ORNL and UT-Knoxville College of Engineering, will head up the Center for Remote Data Analysis and Visualization.
The center will store and examine data generated by computer simulations, including ones used for weather and climate simulation, the Spallation Neutron Source, and widely distributed sensor arrays.
The system will be called Nautilus and will include 1,024 core processors. It will be located alongside Kraken, the world's most powerful academic supercomputer.
