Unusually cool summer weather across Tennessee is likely the largest factor in less West Nile virus being found, according to a state health expert.

Dr. Abelardo Moncayo of the Tennessee Department of Health said July and August didn't produce the hot weather that mosquitoes and the virus need to thrive.

Moncayo reports that mosquito testing for West Nile showed a significant drop. Last summer, 14.6 percent of the samples tested came back positive for West Nile, compared with 11.7 percent this summer.

There have been six confirmed human cases this year and one death. Moncayo said other human cases could still be reported.
