
National Weather Service offices across the Southeast are marking a Severe Weather Awareness Day, to remind residents there's no holiday from severe weather. The tornadoes that hit Mossy Grove in November 2002 are ample proof of that.
Seven people died in those storms; 28 more were injured.
To remind the public that November is an active month for severe weather and tornadoes, the NWS is marking a Severe Weather Awareness Day on Wednesday.
High-profile fall severe weather
- 2009: Four weak tornadoes in Marion, McMinn, and Monroe Counties on October 9
- 2007: A strong EF2 tornado injures 9 people in Marion County on November 14.
- 2002: Anderson, Bledsoe, Cumberland, Morgan, and Scott counties are hit by numerous tornadoes on Veteran's Day. Seven deaths and 28 injuries in Mossy Grove and Joyner in Morgan County.
- 1985: F1 tornado hits near Witt in Hamblen County on November 27.
- 1977: Tornado outbreak at Rose Hill in Union County and Black Fox in Grainger County on October 1. Two injured. Another tornado in Sullivan County injures 10.
