The Internal Revenue Service has $1.77 million in tax refunds due to Tennessee residents the IRS couldn't find to pay.

The 1,849 refund checks were returned to the IRS due to mailing address errors. The average refund check in Tennessee this year was $958.

IRS spokesman Dan Boone said a taxpayer merely has to update his/her address with the IRS to get the refund check reissued.

You can adjust your address on file with the IRS by calling 1-800-829-1954 or by using the "Where's My Refund?" tool on IRS.gov.

In general, the IRS encourages setting up direct deposit for a tax refund, to reduce the number of lost, stolen, or undeliverable checks.

The IRS also said the vast majority of tax refunds reach their intended recipient.
