With the drought conditions of the past couple of years washed away by above average rainfall this summer and autumn, the wildfire season has begun in Tennessee.

Forestry officials say there's no such thing as a safe fire season.

The state Division of Forestry says if there's a fresh fall of dry leaves then a few days of sunshine, some wind and low humidity can turn them into terrific fuel.

Most wildfires are in heavily forested and geographically rugged East Tennessee, where firefighting is a difficult and demanding job.

The division says firefighters battle more than 2,500 wildfires each year.

Permits for outside burning are required from Oct. 15 to May 15 statewide.
