Kentucky State Police spokesperson Walt Meachum says repairs on a punctured gas line are finished and residents were allowed to return to their homes before midnight Saturday.

Meachum confirmed a couple of men shooting guns, punctured a gas line that leads to a Daugherty Petroleum gas well shortly after 6 p.m. Saturday night in the Pathfork community in Harlan County.

Troopers evacuated homes within a quarter mile of the gas leak as a precaution.

Meachum says Daugherty Petroleum has been notified about the leak and crews are expected to make the repairs immediately.

Meanwhile, officers are unsure on the number of people evacuated in the rural area that is not heavily populated.

No injuries have been reported to police in connection with the leak.

Meachum is unsure if charges will be filed against the shooters who allegedly punctured the gas line.
